April 13, 1949 — Mayor Carl Olson has appointed Forrest Johnson as Fremont’s new city attorney and Dr. D.B. Wengert as the new city physician. They were unanimously approved by the city council. Dr. C.H. Chambers was reappointed as dairy inspector.

*Members of the Fremont Carpenters Union are receiving an increase of 71/2 cents per hour in wages under an agreement recently signed with local contractors.

*In all parts of Fremont on Tuesday, little groups of neighbors exchanged words over the back fence as they waited for the earth to cast its shadow on the moon in the first total eclipse visible here since 1945.

Diane Beckel and Sally Wengert were Saturday announced as Fremont’s representatives to Girls State in Lincoln next June. They are to be sponsored by the Fremont American Legion Auxiliary. Wengert, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. D.B. Wengert, will represent Fremont High School. Beckel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Beckel, will represent St. Patrick’s High School. Alternates are Kay Sedlacek, granddaughter of Mrs. Hazel Betkie, and Mary Lou Beckius, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Beckius.

Frances M. Lovell, age 94, of Fremont, NE, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Arbor Manor in Fremont.

She was born January 24, 1918 in Wagner, SD to Thomas and Mathilda (Bertrand) Reandeau. She grew up in Hooper, NE and graduated from Hooper High School in 1930. She moved with her parents to Fremont. She worked for an attorney and several doctors in Fremont, Dr. D.B. Wengert for 18 years, and later for Drs., Nelson, Dillow & Erickson and at the time of retirement for Dr. Stephen Dreyer, in the early 1990’s.

Frances was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and she was a charter member of the Fremont Community Players group that was founded in 1949. She had appeared in about 40 plays such as “Barefoot in the Park” and had directed some of the melodramas and provided costumes. She was best known for playing a bag lady type character known as Opal.

Frances Reandeau married Clarence C. Lovell on March 5, 1943, in Lincoln. Mr. Lovell died April 24, 1962.

Survivors include: Nephew – Dale Reandeau of Fremont, NE; niece – Maria and husband Shannon Smith of Fremont, NE; several cousins; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: parents; husband, Clarence; 2 sisters – Anna Bendtsen & Agnes Nelson; 3 brothers – Jack, Simon & Bill Reandeau; and niece – Mary Jo Tablazon.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 25, 2012 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. Father Dave Belt will officiate. There is no viewing or visitation. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Fremont.

Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont.

Laura Wengert

The funeral for Laura Marie Wengert, 94, of Fremont, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at The Presbyterian Church in Fremont.

She died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Hospice House in Omaha.

Laura Marie Buchanan was born Jan. 2, 1907, in Cedar Bluffs. She graduated from Fremont High School in 1925. She attended Midland Lutheran College for one year and transferred to the University of Nebraska where she graduated in 1929. She married Dorwin Wengert Oct. 17, 1931, in Fremont. He died in 1985.

Her entire life was devoted to being a loving wife and mother. She was a 50-year member of A.J. Chapter of PEO. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Fremont Area Medical Center Auxillary, Red Cross Bloodmobile, a 74-year member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority at the University of Nebraska and a lifelong member of the Fremont Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: a daughter, Sally Wengert of Omaha; a son, Dr. James (and wife, Helen) Wengert of Omaha; three grandsons, Richard (and wife, Sherry) Hove, Daniel (and wife, Leigh) Wengert and Scott (and wife, Cheryl) Hove, all of Omaha; a granddaughter, Catherine (Mrs. Michael) Pettid of Omaha and nine great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Stephen Brownlee will officiate Saturday’s service. Visitation is 4-8 today at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Fremont.

Memorials have been established to the Fremont Area Medical Center Foundation, the May Museum and The Presbyterian Church.

Dr. James Wengert

Dr. James W. Wengert, 72, of Omaha died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at his home.

Survivors include: his wife, Helen C. Wengert; a son, Daniel B. Wengert (and wife, Leigh); a daughter, Catherine M. Pettid (and husband, Mike), all of Omaha; grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew and Lauryn Wengert, Rachel and Nathan Pettid; and a sister, Sarah Wengert of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorwin and Laura Marie Wengert.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Countryside Community Church, 8787 Pacific St., in Omaha. There is no visitation. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with full military honors by Fremont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.

A memorial has been established to Countryside Community Church.

Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler West Center Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
